It’s that time again in Southern California…
the switch in weather from cold (yes, 57°F can feel cold to some of us) to ‘Holy cow! Why is it so hot in November????!!!!’
As you can imagine, this is not the best for your skin, hair or nails. Some common problem areas are dry lips, more hangnails than normal and split ends for those beautiful locks on our head. To help with these annoying issues, we’ve compiled a list to of things to do to help mitigate these problems.
#1 Switch beauty products
When the seasons change so should our moisturizer and hair care products. With this unique situation of going from hot to cold from one day to the next it’s important to remember that our bodies also need different things. Switching products for more hydrating ones during this time of year can be a lifesaver! Remember you need more hydration in the fall/winter and less in the spring/summer. Some suggestions would be Quench from Osmosis, Peptide Moisturizer from Skin Scripts or the Hydrate Wash and Rinse from Kevin Murphy.
#2 Feed your skin
Olive oil, safflower or almond oil is brimming with the fatty acids and antioxidants that will help keep your body hydrated and healthy. Try massaging one of these oils into your skin before you shower, sit for 10 mins. Use this time to meditate, pray or watch an inspiring video online-you deserve 10minutes!!!! We love this video. Then get in the shower (warm water) and wash only the necessary parts and towel dry. This helps stop the hot water and soap from over drying out your skin.
#4 Speaking of water….
Lower the temperature. The temperature of the hot water will strip oils from your skin, so don’t spend too long in scalding hot showers or baths; the result will not be good long term. This may feel good on a cold winter morning, but it will wreak havoc on your skin.
#5 Add avocados to your diet
You are what you eat…so adding some avocado to your diet will help with your skin hydration. Avocado contains lots of healthy fats that will help hydrate your skin from the inside out and they are so good to boot!
#6 Increase your omega-3 fatty acids
As a nation we are deficient in essential fatty acids and it shows in our skin, hair and nails. Omega-3 fatty acids are great in assisting your body to produce the oils on your skin as well as helping you absorb more water into your system. Adding more salmon and oily fish to your diet and you’ll be doing your heart a favor, as well as improving the hydration of your skin.
#7 Honey, Honey, Honey
Organic honey is one of Mother Nature’s best skin care products. It naturally pulls moisture from the air into the skin and is also anti-fungal and anti-bacterial helping soothe irritation and fight infection. Apply honey to any particularly bad areas of dry skin, your lips for example and leave it on for about five minutes, before washing off again with lukewarm water. Repeat this daily, for a few days, and you will soon see the difference in your skin. You can also use on cuticles and hair too!
Doing some or all of these steps will help ensure you will have less hangnails, more moist locks and smoother, un-cracked lips.
